Some tricks of the trade for this meal plan:
Don't crowd the pan when browning the beef for the stew, or the cubes will simply turn gray and never brown nicely.
Dried cherries, available in gourmet sections of supermarkets and specialty stores, add a touch of subtle sweetness to the stew.
Add a side salad with oil and vineagar dresssing, and your favorite crusty bread.

Use tart, firm apples for the brown betty. Once they are sliced, sprinkle with lemon juice to prevent browning.
