Sweet and Spicy California Walnut Sprinkles

1/2 cup bread crumbs, (or fresh white bread crumbs to equal 1/2 cup)
|
2 tablespoons sugar
|
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
|
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
|
pinch salt, if desired
|

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. In a food processor, blend the walnuts until they are finely ground but still light and dry. Combine with the brad crumbs and spread the mixture on a baking pan. Bake for about 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until golden brown and crisp. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg, and salt if desired, then cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally. This keeps about 10 days, stored in airtight container.
